ABOUT US:   

St John's Community Care is a community-based organisation that was established in 1997, and is playing a major role in community care in Far North Queensland. St John's Community Care provides high quality client orientated, community focused Aged Care and Disability Support services striving to achieve the best possible outcomes not only for our clients but also providing support and respite for their carers.

CHRONOLOGY 

31st May 1993

His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos inaugurated the Greek Orthodox Parish of Cairns.   

25th September 1994

With the guidance and support of the Archdiocese, the tireless efforts of our parishioners and the support of the broader community, His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos officially opened and blessed our new holy church of "St John the Baptist".  His Eminence declared "that the Parish of St John would not only serve the needs of its own parishioners but would serve the wider community". 

4th January 1996

The Redlynch Daycare and Early Childhood Development Centre was opened. 

1997

  • St John's Respite Centre at Redlynch opened its doors to the public, providing activities for the frail aged and younger people with disabilities.
  • 10 Community Aged Care Packages (MACP) started under the auspicing body of   Ethnic Community Care Links Inc (ECCLI). 

1998

  • Kuranda Respite Centre was established.
  • Multicultural Aged Care Program transferred from ECCLI to St John's Community Care in July.
  • Project 300 was established. 

1999

  • Inauguration of the Gordonvale Respite Centre took place in June.
  • The Multicultural Access Services commenced in July.
  • Home Assist Secure commenced in August.
  • Cairns Recreation and Social Club program transferred from Cootharinga Society of North Queensland to St John's Community Care in September. 

2000

  • HACC Home Maintenance commenced in February.
  • St John's School Transport Services commenced in May. 

2001

  • St John's Community Care Ltd received enhanced funding from HACC for an additional day at Mareeba Respite.
  • In addition 15 new Community Aged Care packages were approved. 

2002

  • Dementia Support Group established in May.
  • Approval by the Local Council for a "Short Term Overnight Respite" in Gordonvale.
  • Integrated Disability Support Advisory Group formed. 

2003

  • House and land purchased in Mareeba for a Respite Centre. 

2004

  • Inclusive Partners Project established and funded by DSQ.
  • FNQ Home Modification Service started, funded by Department of Housing.
  • Mareeba Respite Centre commenced operating. 

2005

  • Thursday Island Office established in June with 15 CACP's and HACC In-Home Respite.
  • Flexible Dementia Respite Emergency overnight respite funds approved for Gordonvale and Mareeba. 

2006

  • Funding was received from Qld Housing to assist people in the aftermath of Cyclone Larry.
  • St John's Transport Services commenced.
  • The Social Respite program for children commenced.

2007

  • Funding was received from Disability Services Queensland for two houses in Gordonvale to accommodate up to ten young people with high and complex care/disability needs in our Young Lifestyle Care program.  

2008

  • Opening of the two Young Lifestyle Care homes in Gordonvale by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos and Hon. Warren Pitt MP.
  • Opening of the new Centre-based Respite facility in Innisfail by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos and Hon. Warren Pitt MP.

25th September 2009

 

  • The 15th Anniversary of the Parish of St John the Baptist, Cairns when his Eminence Archbishop Stylianos blessed and officially opened the church fifteen years ago on 25th September 1994. 
  • Following the church service this year, His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos blessed the new and extended parish hall and joined the parishioners in their celebrations.
